Let me just start by reassuring you that it’s ok not to like every sort of marketing promotion. After all there are so many options to promote your business, often too many options for businesses that it becomes overwhelming, so being selective and choosing the ones you really like is helpful. Recently I was having a slump in motivation for my own marketing (yes it happens to everyone even marketers!) and I noticed how my energy lifted when I started developing some promotional products for my business. At the time I was working on some 25 years in business note pads and customised branded chocolates. I joked to a colleague ‘I think promotional products are my marketing love language”! I experienced so much glee working out the designs and slogans and of course making sure all my AP Marketing Works colour palette was accurate it really rebooted my marketing mojo.
What’s your marketing love language
Are you like me and love a promotional product from fridge magnets, pens, socks, beanies, post it notes? Or do you just adore social media? Maybe your favourite thing is creating an exceptional customer experience or perhaps designing perfect packaging for your products gives you a buzz. It could be speaking on a podcast, attending a networking event or creating a window display that stops shoppers in their tracks. Whatever promotion activity you really enjoy – just do it for two key reasons.
- You will follow through because it gives you joy
Follow through doesn’t always happen. Businesses have good intentions but can get distracted. It continues to surprise me how we always seem to find time in business for the things we enjoy!
- You will do it well because you enjoy it.
Do you enjoy something because you do it well or is it done well because you enjoy it? I think it can be a bit of both. All I know from my years as a marketing strategist that marketing that is enjoyed is marketing that is implemented better. If you don’t like writing – your communications are not as good as those who do like writing. It’s the same with social media – you can tell who likes it and who loathes it by their social media performance.
How to identify your Marketing Love Language
Think through all the marketing activities you’ve done over the years and identify the tasks you enjoyed. List any that you didn’t enjoy. Look at the marketing tasks on your current to do list. Are there any serial offenders that never get off the to do list? If yes, it could be because they are not in your marketing love language.
To create a more powerful marketing strategy for your business include more promotional activities that are in your marketing love language and drop the ones that aren’t. If you need any help staying on track with your marketing consider our marketing coaching options.
